In 2008, British people spent an incredible £4 billion on computer games and consoles – considerably more than both music sales and cinema box office combined.
However the main players are no longer socially awkward and housebound teenage boys. It’s the parents of these teenagers who’re driving the rise and rise of the video game market. They play more games than their kids and spend longer playing them. The latest US research reveals the average age of a gamer as 35 and rising.
Further than that, according to Gamevision it’s women – at 70% - who make up the largest group of gamers. Women are generally more interested in social fantasy games such as The Sims but even traditionally male dominated areas like World of Warcraft already recruit more than a third of players from amongst women.
