Slackers the Majority in the Workplace?

SLACKERS THE MAJORITY IN THE WORKPLACE?

Research suggests the "work hard, play hard" ethic is on the way out, with more people determined to reap rewards with as little effort as possible.

Disillusioned by long hours, hard work and less spare time than they’d like, many workers are adopting what’s been described as a "slacker ethic".

The report quotes examples of staff hiding behind their desks playing solitaire in order to look busy and students searching the internet for cramming material

The report’s organiser, Dr Bernard Whitley, of Ball State University Indiana said people were still seeking substantial material possessions e.g. fast cars and expensive holidays, but were less willing to work for them.

The survey of 300 men and women, presented at the American Psychological Society's annual conference in Toronto, found that people viewed hard work as pointless, stressful and a waste of time.

Dr Whitley said it was possible that their attitudes had been shaped by the sort of pop stars, celebrities and models who appear to achieve fame and fortune without the daily 9-5 drudge.
