Why do Men See Women as Trophies?
Why Do Men See Women as Trophies?
![]()
It often seems that men group women into two distinct categories – potential life partner and ‘trophy’ women who’ll be useful pawns in the never-ending game of ‘Who’s Most Successful?'.
The trophy partner is generally younger, beautiful and desired by other men. Men frequently behave very differently when they’re around such a woman – projecting their wealth and attributes (equivalent to the male peacock strutting with his tail outstretched). It’s all about vanity, ego and acquisition.
Having dazzling arm candy boosts social status and self-esteem – like designer suits, a Cartier watch or a Porsche. It can open doors to the right introductions or to the right club in the way that a less desirable woman can not. To the insecure man, the ‘wrong’ woman is seen as detrimental to his chances, like an old or cheap car.
Men who’ve climbed the corporate ladder and are earning substantial sums by the time they’re in their 40’s often have all the material trappings of success like an expensive house, car, watch etc. They may be at a loss as to what to do next to impress friends and colleagues.
At the same time, the successful man – even if old or unattractive – becomes simultaneously appealing to younger, good-looking women. Women he never dreamed he could get in his youth are now within his reach and are often irresistible, however incompatible they may be further down the line.
Rock stars in particular, like Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart, seem never to take anything but trophy wives. And billionaires like Donald Trump (whose latest acquisition is model Melania Knauss) are notorious for an endless procession of babes.
And what happens when the trophy wife gets older, like Bianca Jagger and Ivana Trump? In the case of said celebs, they often abandon them - usually with a substantial settlement - and go in search of a younger version.
How to Tell if He’s Seeing You As a Trophy
- He likes to ‘advise’ you on what to wear and goes shopping with you. He’s especially interested in your clothes when you’re both going out with men he aspires to be like or admired by.
- He looks uncomfortable being seen with you if you’re not looking your best.
- He comments on even the tiniest bit of fat on your body (often when he’s overweight himself).
- He buys you a subscription to a gym even though you’ve shown no interest in it.
- He points out ways you’d benefit from cosmetic surgery and may even offer to pay for it.
- He’s constantly telling his friends how desirable you are, how good in bed, what your achievements are, how wealthy/influential your family is etc.
- He always goes for the same type – tall blondes, small brunettes etc. He sees a woman first and foremost as fitting into a desirable category rather than appreciating her individual qualities.
Do Powerful Women Want Trophy Men?
As more women become powerful and wealthy it begs the question of whether these women will behave in the same way. Actress and 40-year-old mother Demi Moore has been in the news recently with her new boyfriend Ashton Kutcher, 25. Recent research suggests that as many as a third of single women over the age of 40 are now either dating or looking to date younger men.
