Why a Fly in your Loo Reduces Rows
Fly etchings in urinals, how flies reduce spraying in urinals, less urinal mess

We were recently sent an email and photos of alleged etched ‘flies’ in the male urinals in Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. The idea is that male ‘splashers’ aim at the fly and this reduces sprayage and what is hideously referred to as ‘piss mist’ (eeeeeeuuuwwww!). We laughed at the story, but assumed it was yet another urban myth.
We were wrong. Apparently the flies do exist and they’re not limited to Amsterdam either. In fact, you can even buy the flies to put in your own loo. And why would you want to?
The etched flies are strategically placed in the exact spot in the urinal which would minimise potential splashing. Studies have shown that having a ‘sweet spot’ (again, yuk!) does indeed reduce toilet mess by as much as 80%. These etched flies are now appearing in male lavatories in various parts of the world including New York’s JFK airport.
So successful is the idea that you can now buy fly ‘stickers’ to place in your urinals at work or even in your own loo at home. Specific instructions are given as to where precisely to place the sticker.
If the thought of a fly in your loo strikes you as unhygienic looking, you could always opt for a little buzzy bee, a ‘target’ or even – if you’re feeling the swell of corporate pride - your company’s own logo. (Though the idea of weeing on your company logo strikes us as a bit of a negative psychological move, but apparently they do sell!).
So if you fancy reducing mist and splashes in your loo – thereby avoiding one of life’s least edifying clean-up jobs – click below and grab yourself a sticker. One less row is clearly a step in the right direction!
