Change spark plugs and air filter if it was a while ago since you've changed them last time. For older cars it is always a good idea to get your car serviced before your MOT.
Flushing the fuel injectors usually helps if you are really worried about your emissions. Check this is part of your car's service.
If you have an check engine warning light on, a noisy exhaust, any exhaust leaks or a broken petrol cap it needs to be repaired before the test - all these items will be inspected during the emission test.
Adding Redex fuel cleaning fluid (readily and cheaply available at Halfords and some garages) to your petrol just before the MOT may help - follow instructions on the bottle.
Important steps to take immediately before the MOT test:
1. Fill the car with premium fuel
2. Take a car for a spin on a faster road - it helps to clean spark plugs and catalytic converter.
3. Try to get the engine fully warmed up before the test.
