How to Change a Car Tyre

Changing a tyre is a horrible job, but it may be unavoidable at some point! No need to worry - it's not all that difficult, just a bit messy and requires a bit of effort...

9 Easy Steps to Changing a Car Tyre

It's a good idea to do a practise run at home:

Step 1

  • Make sure you know where your spare tyre lives,
  • Find the jack and handle for lifting the car up
  • Find the large spanner to loosen the bolts that hold the wheel on.
  • Some cars also have a locking wheel nut key, which you'll need to remove the special, odd-shaped security bolts fitted to some car tyres.

Get then all out and to hand.  It is messy so if you have gloves all the better

Step 2

Place the Jack under the car and wind it up, raising the car and tyre off the ground.  Your car manual will tell you the best place to position the jack

Step 3

Remove any wheel trim caps that are over the wheel, often they just pop off if you pull them.

Step 4

You will see 5 or so nuts that must be loosened, put the spanner onto the nuts and often you must use your foot and whole body weight to loosen.  Loosen all nuts and keep the nuts safe.

Step 5

Pull off the flat tyre

Step 6

Place the new tyre on the wheel

Step 7

Put on the nuts and tighten well, again using your foot and body weight for the final tighten

Step 8

Clip back your wheel trim

Step 9

Take the flat tyre to a garage quickly to repair and ensure you have a good spare tyre just in case.
