Gift Vouchers - for DIVORCE?
Gift Vouchers - for DIVORCE?

A UK legal firm is now offering gift vouchers towards the cost of…..divorce!
London-based Lloyd Plat call it the ‘gift of the year’ and say the idea was born after a client’s relative asked to make a contribution towards the cost of divorce. Senior partner Vanessa Lloyd Platt offered to provide a gift voucher to make the contribution into more of a gift.
Quite staggeringly, Lloyd Platt claims that those requesting the vouchers include husbands and wives who see this as ‘an ideal way that they can finally broach the subject that they no longer wish to be in the marriage.”
Mistresses Too
She also claims to get applications from “mistresses enquiring as to the amounts that they can pay and vouchers that they can buy for their lovers, to finally get on with the promise of divorcing their wives.”
Not Impressed
Not surprisingly, other family lawyers aren’t impressed. Roger Bamber from Mills & Reeve’s family law team says “It’s an interesting publicity angle. A lot of firms do free first interviews, which is what this essentially sounds like, but anything that trivialises divorce or gets people to think about divorce in a superficial way is unhelpful. When you are dealing with children’s lives and managing transition it’s not good and we won’t be running out to copy them’.
Talking of ‘trivialising’, Lloyd Plat’s website offers – of all things – a collection of meal recipes with a ‘divorce related’ angle. Our own personal favourite? Marriage crumble.
