What Are You Looking for in Life?

Just Looking

by Gail Bryden of Your True Potential

Looking out, looking in or just looking?

Do you look out to others for approval?

Or do you look in to yourself to find your own solutions?

Or, just as when you’re in a shop and asked if there’s anything you’d like, you answer ‘just looking’?

What are YOU looking for in life?

Acceptance?
Happiness?
Love?
Peace of mind?

Whatever it is, there’s an innate wisdom within all of us that means we already 'know' what we need to do.  We already have the answers.  For most of us however it’s either obscured by our social conditioning or we’ve prioritised others opinions above our own.

Social Conditioning

Social conditioning is our set of values and beliefs that we acquire from our parents, peers and environment as we’re growing up.  They’re typically formed at a very early age and shape how we interpret the world.

We then use our reaction to subsequent events to reinforce our unique view of the world .e.g. ‘I knew that would happen to me, only bad things ever do’.

This is not a truth, only an interpretation of events.  Events after all are neutral; it’s our choice as to how we interpret them.

There’s no such thing as an absolute truth or reality, only our perception of it.

Given how fundamentally important our beliefs are to how we interpret the world, it may be time to update any that are no longer relevant as they may be holding you back.

‘Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change’

So what is your truth?

Other people act as a mirror for us, allowing us to see our own truth more clearly.

Whether it’s something that we like such as generosity or dislike such as greed, we can only truly recognise it in them because it’s also within us.

Similarly when someone speaks a truth, you’ll know on some level whether it’s true for you, even if that can sometimes feel uncomfortable.

When soliciting other peoples opinion, remember that’s exactly what it is: someone else’s opinion.  If it’s not right for you, don’t allow yourself to become distracted, find a solution that’s right for you.
