Simplicity is not Simple - Edinburgh Feature Home

SIMPLICITY IS NOT SIMPLE.  EDINBURGH FEATURE HOME

As the iconic designer Mies van der Rohe was fond of saying ‘Simplicity is not simple’. To create an interior that's minimal, restrained and yet still interesting and harmonious is indeed not simple.  But it’s been beautifully achieved in the interior of this elegant apartment in Succoth Ave., Murrayfield.

The sitting room is a study in zen-like restraint.  Light floods in from two large glazed areas.  Patio doors lead onto a sunny, south-west facing patio with views over attractive landscaped gardens.  Furniture and fittings have been very carefully chosen and exude the type of quality and luxury that negates any need for unnecessary clutter and adornment.   Rich, polished hardwood flooring from the Far East helps ground what could be a fairly bland space and warms the soft cream and caramel colour scheme.  Simple white blinds diffuse and soften the light and an integral OPUS sound system pipes music around the space.

The same understated, yet elegant appeal is evident in the kitchen/breakfast area.  State-of-the-art integrated appliances from Gaggenau/Siemens are artfully concealed in a stylish, clutter free scheme.  Glossy black granite countertops and splashbacks, together with marble flooring reflect light and inject time-honoured luxury.  A central island unit provides an ideal preparation and conversation space and stylish bar stools provide a practical, yet quirky note.  Simple white blinds again soften and diffuse the light.

An imposing,  contemporary, marble-clad  partition with an inbuilt pebble fireplace provides a stunning focal point to the dining area.  The same rich polished hardwood flooring is carried through and a chrome-based circular table with upholstered chairs provides the perfect spot for intimate dinner parties.  An oversized circular designer light fitting provides intimacy and softly diffused light to the area.

The same zen-like, restful simplicity is carried through to one of three light-flooded bedrooms.  Spot colour in teal and panelled bed linen injects some understated but lively interest.  A stunning grid-like padded headboard occupies most of the bed wall and provides a soft, luxurious focal point.  Softly diffused light is provided by stylish table lamps atop simple white-lacquered drawer towers.

Tactile Italian travertine is a key feature of one of the bathrooms and panels of glossy, silver-grey mosaic help offset and complement the richness of the marble.

Simple yet stylish German bathroom fitments – including an attractive circular shower  with a  jet feature - make a real statement .
