Georgian Splendour - Feature Home
Feature home, period interior design, classic Georgian design ideas
This week’s feature home is a breathtakingly proportioned Georgian townhouse with spectacular city views.
The main first floor drawing room features ornate, Adam-esque ceiling details, cornicing and bespoke overmantel mirror. The focal point of the room is a handsome marble fireplace surrounding an intricately detailed cast iron grate. Two sets of floor-to-ceiling French windows flood the room with light and afford tranquil views over trees and the city beyond. A small terrace with ornate balustrade is the perfect spot for the day’s first cappuccino.
A polished original parquet floor is topped by a fine wool rug in delicate Aubusson tones and upholstery, walls and drapes reflect the morning light in warming shades of amber and gold. Overstuffed horsehair sofas, piles of books and a walnut table containing a collection of silver snuff boxes create a relaxed, clubby feel.
The striking, handmade painted wood kitchen units were designed and built by a local cabinetmaker to a very high spec. The original chimney breast is home to an Aga and two oversized armoires either side of the breast house a collection of ovens, pull out pantries, pan drawers and spice racks. A central island with a deep iroko chopping board top houses a concealed dishwasher and a double butler’s sink has all the capacity you could need for the largest of dinner parties.
The bright master bedroom is a refreshing blend of cool mint greens and cheerful, berry coloured prints. Above the bed is an understated coronet with drapes in a fresh Laura Ashley print. The headboard is padded with a matching print and dainty Victorian inlaid walnut side tables make a great home for books, flowers and other bedside clutter.
A colourful framed impressionist print and two traditional swing arm reading lamps complete the classic ensemble.
The spacious master bathroom was converted from a smaller bedroom and features more floor to ceiling French windows and a small Juliet balcony. A renovated Edwardian roll top bath with telephone taps takes centre stage. Period bathroom and light fittings, a Louis-style fireplace and a comfy Lloyd Loom chair contribute to a relaxed, but formally classical feel. A great place to chill at the end of a stressful day!
