You Ain't Seen a Garage Conversion Like This!!
converted garage feature home, contemporary interior design ideas
This week’s highly individual feature home is a former garage composed of two early 20th century industrial buildings. They’ve been fully restored and furnished as a characterful family ‘loft’ property with a large mezzanine.
The vast open-plan sitting area features the original, patinated oak parquet flooring and the cathedral ceiling is criss-crossed by solid oak beams and trusses. A reclaimed French antique fireplace with 1920’s Bauhaus-style tiles makes a real statement. Shelving constructed from reclaimed floor planks flanks the chimney breast into which has been built a surround-sound home cinema system. A chunky coffee table made from old railway sleepers and a giant log basket reinforce the rustic theme.
In a corner of the room atop reclaimed Minton tiles is a state-of-the-art Bulthaup kitchen and a vintage 1950’s bar with original diner stools. An old 50’s juke box adds an atmospheric touch.
The second sitting room is home to the original mezzanine floor – now housing the master bedroom. The original brickwork has been stripped of its layers of greasy paint and meticulously sanded and sealed. The railings were rescued from an old railway bridge. Industrial lighting, a vast 1920’s ceiling fan, old 1950’s flocked rockers and a motorbike echo the building’s industrial heritage.
The mezzanine-level master bedroom makes a feature of the original cast iron trusses. Bespoke iroko furniture lends a strong, crisp and masculine air. A vast iroko cabinet forms a room divider, separating off the master bathroom with its sleek Boffi fitments. The divider unit houses his and hers basins and offers copious drawer and cupboard space.
At the rear of the property is a teenage bedroom which has a preppy, Ivy League feel with its Ralph Lauren style bedding. Solid oak furnishings echo the original oak beams and sports memorabilia, musical instruments and framed souvenirs give a real cosmopolitan feel to this room.
