Women 30-50 Most Irresponsible Drinkers

As figures suggest males are starting to drink less alcohol, women – especially between the ages of 30 and 50 - are ignoring dire health warnings and actually increasing their intake.

Researchers from Cardiff University breathalysed 1,200 late-night drinkers. Dr Simon Moore, of the university's violence and society research group, said:

"We found older women were more intoxicated and the further they got into their 30s and 40s, the higher the alcohol content in their blood'.

Half of the women had exceeded the daily recommended limit of 6 units of alcohol - equivalent to two large glasses of wine.  By contrast, only a third of men had drunk more than the recommended daily limit of 8 units.

Dr Gray Smith-Laing, a gastroenterologist at Medway Maritime Hospital, said large wine glasses made it difficult for women to monitor how much they were drinking.

"These days, a lot of women go out and drink bottles of wine. "The big glasses in pubs now are a third of a bottle, so it doesn't take them long to wade through large volumes without having any idea of what they have put away."
