Why Men Who Marry Smart Women Live Longer
Research from Stockholm University suggests that men who marry smart women are likely to live longer.
The study of 1.5 million people from the 1990 Swedish census found a woman's level of education was more important than her partner's when it came to his longevity.
The researchers suggest the reason is that more educated women are likely to be more aware of healthy diets and the possible range of available medical treatments. Since females traditionally take more responsibility for the home, their education is more likely to have a direct effect on the family lifestyle – e.g. in the choice of food habits. This in turn is likely to substantially influence their partner's lifespan.
There was also, it seems, a link to dying from certain diseases. Men married to women who left school early were a third more at risk of dying from circulatory problems.
Say the report’s authors:
''If highly educated women more easily understand the plethora of advice about healthy lifestyles, women's education could have a substantial influence on the health and mortality of the partner. 'Women with higher education may in addition (be able to) receive better medical treatment, which may also be true for men - and for partners of highly educated women.''
