Edinburgh’s Humble Mosque Kitchen Nominated for Top Food Award

Nominees this year for Scotland’s top dining experience included Tom Kitchin’s Michelin starred restaurant in Leith, Rocpool in Inverness, run by the famous French chef Albert Roux, and – incredibly - the canteen at Edinburgh’s biggest mosque!
While Tom Kitchin’s restaurant offers a very perjink Saddle of Roe Deer with Endive Tatin and Celeriac Fondant for £32.50, lamb curry with rice at the Mosque Kitchen will set you back just £4. It’s served on paper plates with plastic cutlery and diners sit at wobbly communal tables under a corrugated plastic canopy.
Nonetheless, Scottish Restaurant Awards have praised the Mosque Kitchen –which attracted quite a few celebrities during the Festival - for fragrant, really authentic flavours and very generous portions.
Says a Mosque Kitchen spokesman:
“We used to just serve food to people who came in for prayers. But we wanted to be able to provide everyone with a decent meal for a very low cost so we opened up.”
The 50-strong team of volunteers were amazed to learn they had been nominated. “We were all over the moon, but very, very surprised. Our goal is to provide good, inexpensive food in humble surroundings. We cook the food exactly as we would at home and only use the freshest meat, ingredients and olive oil.”
