Is there such a thing as a hoover that actually hoovers?

I hate hoovering with a passion, mostly because no sooner have i stopped than teh carpet need hoovered again.  Is there such a thing as a hoover that really does hoover.  I have tried Dyson and couple of times and and they were rubbish and broke.  if anyone actually has a hoover that really does suck up all the dirt, please tell me what kind it is - thanks
