For sheer girliness I love Tiger Lilly on George Street. Fab cocktails! They do a very pink afternoon tea as well! For family laughs I love the Camera Obscura/World of Illusions. I went with my sister and we screamed with laughter at the various distortions of ourselves. OK we'd had a glass of wine or two.... but still. Holyrood's great if you're impressed by pomposity. The Parliament building ditto.

In answer to your questions:

1. Memorable meal: has to be Prestonfield house for opulent over the top extravagance and it is not too expensive or the Dome for a more toned down version.

2. Afternoon tea: the Balmoral is wonderful, although you will have to contact them directly for the wheat free info

3 Tourist things: do go to the Royal Mile is is both great and tacky but fun, a ghost tour at night is great fun and a must is Mary Kings Close.  The Royal Yaught Britannia is also worth a visit.

4. Restaurant near festival theater - the Outsider, 15-16 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EE, 0131 226 3131

5. Nice things to do; walk along the water of leith, listen to jazz at the jazz bar on Chambers Street, visit the National Museum on Chamber street

6. boutiques: George street have the top end stores, mullberry walk has Harvey nicols etc, The grassmarket and Victoria street is fantastic for the weird and wonderful and William street has some great women and underwear boutiques.

Hope that all helps
