Botox is one of the major heavyweights in the battle against ageing. But what is it and how does it work? And are the long term effects more damaging than the short term gains...?.
What is Botox/Vistabel?

Botox is made from 'botulinum toxin', a poison produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium causes botulism - a severe form of food poisoning. In small quantities, however, Botox merely interrupts nerve impulses to muscles in the face.
The treatment we all know as Botox® has now been formally approved for cosmetic use under a new name - VISTABEL® (meaning beautiful view!) Botox® and VISTABEL® contain exactly the same tried and tested formulation, from the same manufacturer, Allergan.
What does Botox / Vistabel do for you?
Deep wrinkles such as frown lines between the eyes, forehead lines and crows feet are caused by overactive muscle movement which gradually wear away the collagen in the skin, causing the skin to crease and wrinkles to appear. Botox® / VISTABEL® relaxes these muscles, preventing the formation of wrinkles and smoothing out lines.
How Does it Work?

A muscle relaxant is injected by syringe directly into the wrinkles, temporarily relaxing the facial muscles and preventing the formation of wrinkles and softening existing lines. The most common areas are between the eyebrows & crows feet at the corner of the eyes. This treatment has been used on over 1 million patients worldwide for almost 20 years and is supported by a wealth of long-term safety data.
How Long Does It Last?
The treatment generally takes 5-8 days to work and last between 3-4 months (this varies from patient to patient depending on your strength of expression). With repeated treatments (as advised by your specialist) the effects tend to last longer over time. Botox may be unsuitable for use around the mouth as the muscles there are important for facial expressions and eating
