Considering Cosmetic Surgery?

Considering Cosmetic Surgery?

Think carefully about why you would want cosmetic surgery and what you realistically expect it to do for you. Having a breast enlargement, nose job or tummy tuck may make you look better, but it's unlikely to resolve any underlying personal or psychological issues you may have.

Talk to your GP

Talk things through with your GP before considering cosmetic surgery. Your GP can then refer you to a suitable consultant. Ask your GP if there is a local support group which may also be able to help.

Research Practitioners

You should thoroughly check out any surgeons that are recommended. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons will provide you with a list of qualified surgeons in your area. The Association will also give you some background details, information on credentials and any general details you require on UK cosmetic surgeons.

Important Points to Bear in Mind:

Cosmetic surgery can be prohibitively expensive (it's rarely available on the NHS)

Surgery isn't without risks and complications

Procedures aren’t guaranteed to give the results you hope for

You need to thoroughly check the credentials of any surgeon you consider using

Wherever possible, speak to people who’ve gone through the same procedure

Always make sure you are very aware of the consequences of the surgery and what is involved, what after care you will need. Cosmetic surgery can be life changing for some individuals and in most cases have a very positive outcome.

The Department of Health has comprehensive information about cosmetic surgery to help people make informed choices. It can be downloaded in PDF format.
